The Waterways are pleased to say they are part of the dementia-friendly walks series – Norfolk Easy Ambles.
Supported by Active Norfolk, there are nine walking routes located around the beautiful county of Norfolk. They are designed to allow everyone to enjoy an accessible walk, including those living with dementia and their carers.
Each walk gives points of interest which stimulates sensors , allowing people to connect to the world, often resulting in memories being jogged, which in turns leads to conversation.
The amble at The Waterways has been designed to give people the chance to take in the park’s Venetian Waterways, Boating Lake and Ornamental Gardens, alongside the sea air and beach, which runs adjacent to the site.
As with the eight other Norfolk Easy Ambles, the Waterways walk is designed to be fully accessible for those living with dementia:
- Flat hard surfaces underfoot.
- Wide walkways.
- Regular seating during the route.
- Lift access to the café. Café on route has a small step.
- Refreshments available throughout the route.
- Easily accessible toilets near start of route,
- Nearby car park for disabled badge holders.

Note: The Norfolk Easy Ambles programme has been funded by SAIL, a partnership project between Active Norfolk and Norfolk County Council’s Environment Team with support from Public Health. The project aims to stimulate active ageing, longer independent living, and less dependence on traditional health and social care services.
